Older adults tend to have lower rates of substance use compared to younger adults. However, higher rates of co-existing medical problems pose greater health risks when combined with substance use.

The four Core Training modules (which review the main principles and practices of SBIRT) and the three Motivational Interviewing modules (which introduce learners to key concepts and ideas that are central to using the brief intervention) are the foundation of SBIRT training. For providers of older adults, the supplement training module for older adults should be helpful.
