Adult substance use includes both excessive alcohol consumption, use of illicit drugs, and use of prescription drugs for recreational purposes. Rates of harmful substance use tend to be highest in the adult population, making them the primary target for identification and treatment. The training content and tools found below will be useful as you address substance use in adults.

Core Training (Adults, Youth, and Older Adults)

Four core training modules review the main principles and practices of the screening, brief intervention, and referral to treatment model. 

Motivational Interviewing (Adults, Youth, and Older Adults)

Brief intervention is based on motivational interviewing principles. These three training modules introduce learners to key concepts and ideas that are central to using the brief intervention.

Supplemental Training - Additional Topics

Supplemental training includes the following topics: mental disorders, health considerations, psychosocial issues, rural issues, getting SBIRT into practice, and SBIRT refresher.
